More Than Subjects — They’re the Building Blocks for Life
Based in Maryport, a seaside town along the beautiful Solway Firth in Cumbria, Solway STEM Academy is a passion project built on the belief that every child deserves access to inspiring, hands-on STEM learning — no matter where they live. In rural areas, where we’re far from big cities and major science centres, those opportunities can be fewer and farther between. Solway STEM Academy aims to bring big experiences to a small community — helping young people across West Cumbria discover just how exciting and full of potential the world of STEM really is.
At a Solway STEM Academy session, children don’t just sit and listen — they get stuck in with hands-on activities that make science, technology, engineering and maths feel exciting and real. Every workshop is carefully linked to the National Curriculum so what they learn builds on the knowledge they’re already studying at school. But more importantly, each session connects that learning to real-world engineering tasks and processes, helping children understand why STEM matters and how it shapes the world around them.
Curriculum
All Solway STEM Academy workshops are carefully mapped to the National Curriculum, ensuring they complement and enhance what children are already learning in the classroom. Each session is designed with a specific age group in mind, covering Early Years through to Key Stage 2.
Programme
Solway STEM Academy delivers a wide range of dynamic workshops covering a broad spectrum of STEM and engineering topics. From interactive experiments to creative problem-solving challenges, each workshop is designed to make STEM exciting, accessible, and relevant for young learners.
Events
Most workshops can be adapted for events beyond the classroom. STEM Skills
Children strengthen their core science, technology, engineering, and maths skills by actively applying what they’ve learned in class to exciting, hands-on activities.
Real- World Links
Workshops help children make meaningful connections between classroom learning and the wider world around them. They begin to see how STEM plays a vital role in everyday life.
Creative Thinking
Each session provides a space for children to think outside the box, explore new ideas, and approach challenges in their own unique ways.
Problem Solving & Teamwork
Each session encourages children to think critically, work together, and try out ideas. By tackling problems as a team, they build confidence, resilience, and essential collaboration skills.
